Damn Donuts

My love of donuts should be legendary by now, right? I have always loved donuts, but especially the kind you get at the cidermill, that are more grease than substance and taste so sinfully, calorically good.  Ah, donuts…my achilles heel.

Last Friday, my department had a “team outing,” and it just happened to be at a local cidermill. It was really cold, but the sun was shining, and it was a nice day, so we all went to the cidermill and hung out, eating donuts and drinking cider. I like cider okay, but I don’t love it, so that was easy to avoid.  Normally, I might splurge on a single donut, but it just so happens that someone else in the department had brought in some chocolate chip cookies earlier in the day, and well…I do love me some cookies. The cookies were good and worth the splurge, but that meant that when I got to the cidermill, I didn’t have many points left over for donuts.

So there I sat, at the table surrounded by my coworkers, while the donuts just lay (laid? lei?) there on the table in their little white waxed paper bag, mocking me. I resisted for a long time, while my coworkers all tried to foist them on me. The trouble with being an active person who has lost a lot of weight is that people think that it’s no big deal for you to have a treat–because you clearly don’t have food issues anymore, right?? 😛 The reality is, normally it shouldn’t be a big deal for me to have a donut.  Everything in moderation, I always say.  But I was trying to be smart as I geared up for a busy weekend.

As I politely declined the donuts, over and over, my coworkers kept taunting me. “Oh come on, one won’t hurt.” “You probably ran this morning, right?” (I didn’t; Fridays are my rest day.) “Well, you had to run sometime this week, so you deserve this.”

And the comments continued. I know my coworkers weren’t trying to sabotage me…they often talk about how impressed they are with how much my health has changed since I started working there.  And the reality is, I try not to be that person who goes to a gathering and denies herself a treat that everyone else is enjoying. I don’t like to portray the theory that you can only be skinny if you sacrifice everything you love.  I don’t believe that at all, and I want other people to realize that you don’t have to sacrifice everything in order to be healthy.

So, after a little more inner debate, and a lot more encouragement from my coworkers, I grabbed a donut and devoured ate it. It was really small, which was rather disappointing, actually. But everybody else seemed happy that I’d stop denying myself the donut, and that was the end of it.

I’ve actually been really good last week, tracking everything, including the extra chocolate I ate after Halloween, the cookies, the donut. I ran an extra mile on Tuesday, and then, for my Saturday long run, I decided to do seven.

It was a very windy run, even windier than the prior week.

That’s not a very good picture, but you’re supposed to see the corn stalks blowing in the wind. 😛 I ran the first couple of miles headlong into the wind, which was sustained in the high teens with gusts up to about 26. It was hard, and I was glad to turn to the east and have a bit of a break. After another half-mile, I was going south again, but I had a little bit of a shelter from the wind on that road. I had decided to take a different route this time, just because I’m getting bored with the same old thing, so this week, I ran down to the waterfront. Talk about windy!

Check out those waves! After that, I turned around and went back, with a side trip down a different road for fun.

I was impressed with the foliage, and I wish I had come down this way when there were more leaves on the trees a few weeks ago.

After I got away from the water, and ended up back on the northerly route with the wind at my back, I was flying! It was actually kind of fun to have the wind pushing me along. 🙂  I had planned on doing an easy run in the low-11 range, and that’s pretty much what I got!

What I hadn’t planned on was the blister that ended up rubbing raw on my left toe. 🙁

Dang it! These are my brand new shoes! :/  I quickly rinsed the shoe in cold water, but I then rushed off to church for JJ’s first communion class.  Afterwards, I took my friend Renee to lunch so I could hear all about her experience at the New York Marathon. Yep, I know someone who’s run the New York Marathon. And yes, she is a rockstar! 😉

It was a busy weekend for my hockey boys as well. Jamie’s team has really struggled this year, and they unfortunately have been winless in the league games. Then this weekend, they had a game Friday, Saturday, and Sunday. Was almost like a tournament, but we got to sleep in our own beds. 😉 I’m happy to report that they won all three games!  They were really fired up this weekend, and even beat a team that had a 6-1 record!

I was so proud of Jamie for his hard work this weekend, especially.

And only one penalty. 😉

JJ’s team also had a game this weekend, which JJ unfortunately had to miss due to his first communion class. Two other players were missing as well, but I’m delighted to report that his team still managed a 6-3 victory with only 10 kids!

Sunday was quite fun, with a hockey game at 9am, and then first Communion at 10:30am. Which in itself is a bit of a challenge, and then throw in the fact that there was a half-marathon in town on top of it. :p But we managed to get there on time, and it was a lovely service.

It’s so rare that we get a decent family picture. 😉

And, now the moment you’ve all been waiting for: when I stepped on the scale on Monday morning, after working so hard to stay on track so that I could finally get down below 122, maybe…just maybe…

IMG_2306

But, no.  True to form, I cursed at the scale. :/ Seriously though, 3 1/2 pounds!? I don’t even see how that’s possible. I was frustrated at first, but then I realize that right before I stepped on the scale, I was feeling great after having had such a great week. So I am trying to just continue on the path, and hopeful that next week will be better. It sure is hard not to get frustrated, sometimes, though. 🙁  Stupid donut!!!

Thanks for reading!

What a lovely family photo! You have such a busy life I have no idea how you do it at.
The other day you crossed my mind, I wondered have you ever gotten your body fat percentage checkout. I see from your posts how much you run and weight train maybe some of your gain is from that. Just a thought? I love your photo and reading about your adventures!

Thank you for the nice comment on our family photo, Joy! 🙂

I have thought about doing a body fat percentage check, but I honestly have no idea where to go to get one. I don’t have a gym membership, and I suspect if that’s where they do them, they’d probably want me to join first, lol! I’ll look into it, though. Thanks for commenting!!

Ah, that donut!I have been saying “yes” to nearly everything lately. I was talking about my “plan” approaching the holidays with my health coach and she asked what I think my first step would be. I said “Don’t eat things that I don’t like or don’t really want”. She seemed kind of dumbfounded by that, like it was common sense, but my food issues are like the joke I remember from Rodney Dangerfield “I like seafood. If I see food, it eat it!”

I want my plan for the holidays to be to only eat one small treat a day and if I want something else, carry that over to the next day, but am I really going to wait to eat it? Hmmm…..

Would you have saved that donut to eat the next day when you had the points for it? Just trying to see if I’m the only crazy one 🙂

People who don’t have food issues just don’t get it, do they? 🙁

I hope your plan for the holidays goes well…it sounds like a good one!!

I wouldn’t have saved the donut, lol. 😉
