Strawberry Jam 2016

Another jam-making weekend is in the books!  It was actually quite a jam-packed weekend.  (Ha ha ha ha! I had to!)  First, I took half a day off work on Friday to go pick strawberries with my little minions.

They were not overly enthusiastic to be there, but they knew better than to argue. 😉  It took us about 90 minutes to pick 28 quarts of strawberries (roughly 33 pounds of berries!).  That night, we had a party for Jamie’s 8th grade class, and then the following morning, he and I were up early to run Kona, which I’ve already written about. When that was done, I came home and took a nap because I was so exhausted from running in the heat. I didn’t wake up until 2:30pm, at which point I got to work canning jam.  Luckily, I had a willing helper:

JJ really enjoys jam-making.  He crushed, measured, stirred, poured, sealed, and more!  I was truly amazed at how eagerly he did all the work.  He is going to be a star jam-maker some day–and surprise the heck out of his future wife, I’m sure! 😉

But although we had lots of jam-making to do in a shortened amount of time, we still had to make time for one last training run for his 8k that is coming up Friday (tomorrow!).  An 8k is about 5 miles (don’t tell JJ, though–I told him it’s “a little over four”… 😉 ), so his last long run was a 4-miler.  He wasn’t overly excited about it, but he gave his all!

This was not only his longest run ever, it also marked the first time he has ever run all the way to the end of our road (which is 2 miles long).  It was momentous enough that we had to get a picture:

He looks depressed in that picture because he knows he still has two more miles to run, ha ha!  When we finally got home, I told him I wanted a picture, and he replied, “Wait, I have to get set up for the shot.”

Ha ha ha!  My little drama king. 😀  I was so proud of him, though!

My eating was definitely not the best last week.  I’m still trying to catch up with my big Canadian project, and although I did managed to not work this past weekend (first time in a month!), I was busy all week and did not eat very well.  Plus, we had homemade biscuits on Sunday because, well…there was fresh jam!  They were quite good, thank you very much. 🙂  When it was all said and done, my scale reflected about what I expected:

That’s up 1.6 from the week before.  I think it probably could have been a lot worse.  I don’t like seeing my weight so high above my goal (120), but my good eating habits haven’t been on point this last month, and when you add that on top of the fact that it’s summer, when I tend to retain water normally, well…it is what it is. I did have a few really bad eating days last week (the trip to Cedar Point, when I did well all day and then totally crashed and burned with snacks on the drive home) and Sunday with all the biscuits. 😮  But although it wasn’t my best week, I had a lot of good things going on, and sometimes, good experiences trump good eating.  Like this:

And this!

That’s a total of 73 jars, less this year, simply because I still have leftovers from last year and realized I don’t need to do 90-100 jars of jam, lol!

Thanks for reading!
