The Joe

Oops, it’s been a while since I posted!  The nice thing about an unadvertised blog, though, is that it really doesn’t matter.    Still, I suppose I should try to put up a post before May is over!

These pictures are near and dear to my heart…my younger son had the opportunity to skate at Joe Louis Arena (where the NHL’s Detroit Red Wings play) with his IP class (IP stands for instructional program, and is basically a “learn to play hockey” class). This was the second reason I bought my Canon, and was what helped speed up the purchase…I knew I wanted to have a “real” camera for this event. The kids got to practice for an hour. Well, actually, it was only about 45 minutes because the facilities folks spent a good 45 minutes trying to fix the hanging scoreboard, which they had to lower down to the ice to work on, but they were nice enough to add on extra time at the end to let the kids get nearly the full hour in. It was an amazingly cool experience, and then, even more fun…they got to skate a scrimmage against each other during the first intermission in front of all the fans. Talk about a once-in-a-lifetime experience! I had so much fun taking pictures, and when I shared them with all the families, they were so kind and grateful. It’s stuff like this that makes me happy I bought this camera.

PS: There was also a staff photographer who took some shots, but I can say with certainty that my shots were WAY better than his…he was clearly not familiar with how to fix white balance!

This has nothing to do with the kids, but I AM a Red Wings fan, you know.

Here’s my little guy, coming onto the ice. He looks so small!

Lining up for his shot.

Love this shot of him looking around the arena. So cute!

Just taking a moment for reflection, ha ha!

I think this shot speaks for itself.

This one turned out well. Probably could work on the white balance a little more, but I still like the shot.

Joe Louis is actually pretty well lit, so it wasn’t too hard to take good action shots, even for a dummy like me!

A little awe never hurt anyone.

This one warms my heart…this was DS#1 giving DS#2 some skating advice. Because, at almost 9 years old, he’s such a pro, you know. :p

This final one was NOT taken with my Canon but with my old Sony. During the game, they of course didn’t allow anything higher than about 80mm into the arena, so the Sony was all I could bring. Still, I was positively thrilled with this shot of DS#2 coming into the arena and getting his first glimpse up to see 20,000 hockey fans cheering for him and his teammates. I was honored when the hockey association asked me if they could use this shot for their newsletter to help market their program. *insert big cheesy grin here*

Thanks for letting me share with you one of my favorite experiences as a hockey mom!
