It’s Time

My week has been pretty busy, with both ups and downs, unfortunately.

On a down note, I had a funeral to attend this week. It was a friend’s mother, a lady who was just the sweetest, kindest, most generous person I’ve ever known. It saddened me to know she was gone, but I have many, many happy memories of her, and I’m comforted to know that she is no longer suffering.

Besides the visitation and funeral, I’ve also been visiting my sister, who had surgery on Monday. She’s doing fine and is home now, but surgery can be tough, and I’ve tried to be there to help cheer her up.

In between all that, I’ve been exercising and running and biking and playing hockey mom. 🙂 On Wednesday, I left work early to attend the funeral, and I ended up getting home earlier than I normally would on a work day. This enabled me to do some strength training out in the barn. My husband was off that day and he was actually doing his workout when I got home, so, for the first time in about 13 years, we were able to work out together.

Aren’t we cute? The couple that trains together stays together, right? 😉 My husband has been working out quite a bit recently (I think my healthy lifestyle is finally rubbing off on him!), and I took the opportunity to snap a shot of him doing one of his exercises where he lifts the big “Olympic” bar above his head.

The thing weighs a LOT (I can barely lift it off the ground, much less over my head!), so this really is a pretty impressive feat in my opinion. Especially when you consider he does it 10 times in a row!

DS#1 went to 5th grade camp this week, so that allowed me some quality time with DS#2. He wanted to go for a bike ride on Wednesday, but by the time I got done with my weight training, the sky wasn’t looking too good.

He was insistent, though, so we headed out for a two-mile ride. It was tons of fun…he’s so cute and funny, but he is often overshadowed by his brother, so it was nice to enjoy his company. He kept telling me we were in the “biking Olympics” and he was determined to beat me!

We almost didn’t beat the rain home, though!

Thursday morning, I got up at 5am and did my run on the road. The weather was perfect…55° and no wind! I wore a tshirt and capri pants and although I was a bit chilly at first, I was soon perfectly comfortable. It was a still somewhat dark still when I started, and I wasn’t able to see my watch clearly, so that meant I had to just run by feel. Turns out my “feel” wasn’t too bad.

Sooo close to a sub-10 pace, but that’s okay. The point is that it was a good run. My knee didn’t start to hurt until about 3 miles, so that’s progress (it is usually between 2 and 2.5). Once again, I was able to run through it, and when I was done, I felt really good. And the view was beautiful!

I probably shouldn’t point this out, because it will mar an otherwise beautiful picture, but if you look close, you can see the garbage truck on the road in the distance. 😉 I “chased” it for about the last 2 miles, lol! Luckily, I never actually caught it. 😛

Today was a full-on rest day for me. I probably should have done my strength training, but I decided to give myself a true break, because tomorrow is The Day. Yes, it’s time for me to go back to where all my misery began and conquer that nine-mile run. After last week’s successful 7-miler in my neighborhood, I’ve decided that I’m not only ready to venture back out into the world, and not only tackle that nine-mile run I never successfully completed… I’m ready to do it at the very park where I injured myself almost 2 months ago. My knee is not perfect by any stretch, but I believe I can handle this run. More importantly, I believe I’m ready to get this monkey off my back that has me too scared to even think of signing up for another half-marathon.

So, wish me luck! I’m actually kind of excited about it…it’s almost guaranteed to be a better run than the last time I tried. For one, it’s warmer, and for two, I don’t have a cold. 😉 I will let you know how it goes. I’ll have a very busy running weekend for sure, because, besides nine miles tomorrow, I’m running a 5k with my son on Sunday. Happy Mother’s Day to me! 😀

Thank you SO MUCH to everyone for all the positive comments and support—it is truly appreciated! You all have been an incredible inspiration and motivation to me over these last 7 weeks, and it has been your encouragement that has kept me going when I was so depressed and defeated. My plan is to come back tomorrow and report good news for you all!

I’m impressed your husband is working out. B will eat the veggies I put on his plate…but I’ve never seen him exercise. He is naturally built like a Greek god. I’m jealous.

GOOD LUCK ON YOUR 9 MILER!!!

I demand you to run easy and for your knee to cooperate!

Let us know how it goes! AND don’t hurt yourself! Run smart!
