New Beginnings and New Habits

So, while I was busy living the everyday details of my life as a mom to two fine, strapping young hockey players, while I was distracted and not paying attention, this kid…

Suddenly became this kid…

And as if that wasn’t bad enough, he then decided, without consulting me, that it was okay for him to start high school!

Say what?! 😮

Seriously, they say the days pass slowly, but the years fly by, and it’s true!  However, unlike some of my other “freshman mom” friends, I did not actually get upset when I dropped him off for his first day of high school. It was a struggle just to get him to agree to those two pictures, and as I drove away, I could see that he was clearly excited and ready for this new step in his journey. And I was confident that he was ready.

One week down, and I’m happy to say that he is very excited about school and seems to be having a great time. After the challenges of his eighth-grade year, I am so relieved to see him excited to go to class each day and even doing his homework without any prodding whatsoever! I think it helps that he’s jumped into high school life with both feet, including, of course, sports. He played hockey over the summer with the school’s hockey team (varsity, because it’s a small school, lol!), and this fall, he’s joined the JV football team. They had their first scrimmage yesterday, and even though he didn’t play a lot (to be expected for a freshman that is not a superstar), he was all smiles.

His brother doesn’t start school for a couple more weeks, and I’ll admit that I’m a little bit concerned about him. This will be his first time going to school where his big brother wasn’t also attending, but I’m hopeful that he will jump into the “middle school”-like atmosphere of fifth grade at his school with both feet. I may get a little emotional when I put him on the bus all by himself for the first time, though. 😛

So yes, there has been plenty to keep us occupied this last week. Including this:

That’s right, the boys and I sold fish dinners, as well as french fries and other things, at the local festival to support Jamie’s hockey team. It was fun, and I got to sample a little bit of some chili fries, which I haven’t had in many, many months. And I do love a good chili fry. 😉 Plus, I felt that after running 10 miles that morning, I deserved it.

Besides the chili fries, I also took the time to make JJ’s brownies, as we call them now, because I just adore them. And 10 miles was almost 1000 calories burned! One of the problems I have with things like brownies, cookies, or any type of large dessert, is that it’s hard to enjoy it in moderation. It’s just always seems to be there, enticing me.  Not this time, though! I struck upon the simple idea of putting them away in a cupboard, instead of leaving them on the counter. You’d think that wouldn’t be a big deterrent, since it wouldn’t be hard for me to actually go into the cupboard and get them, but just not having them in my sight every time I walked into the kitchen really did make a difference. Out of sight really is out of mind, and I only ate one brownie all weekend. I was actually rather proud of myself for that accomplishment.

And that leads me to this week’s weigh-in:

Look at that! Even with brownies and chili fries, I still managed to lose a pound. This was my first week of my higher carb target and also working harder to hit my protein goal each day. Here’s what my week shaped out to be with respect to my macros:

MacroBreakdown

Wow!  I didn’t realize it until I charted it out, but I actually was a bit under my calorie goal and a bit over my protein goal.  Go figure!  Here’s how my carbs shook out for the week:

Only one day where I was over!  That’s a first for me!  🙂  It seems like my new targets worked out pretty well, although I’ll admit that on Saturday, I actually did have a lot of calories left over.

CalorieChart0815

Yowza!  😮 Still, I’ve had weeks where I ran long and then had a similar calorie deficit, but still didn’t lose, so I’ll take it! I’m going to continue with the current macro targets and see where it takes me. I’ll admit that getting in the protein is HARD. It’s just not something I typically crave. But this week, I cooked up some chicken breast and have just been eating it in the evening if I’m still low on my protein count. It’s a good thing I really like chicken breast! 😉

That’s all I got for ya this week! 🙂 Thanks for reading!

I hope Jamie and JJ both have great school years!

Do you like either cottage cheese or Fage yogurt? They are both great sources of protein. I like to slice up a peach to mix in with a sprinkle of cinnamon and a teaspoon of sliced almonds for an afternoon or evening snack.

I’m trying to catch up on comments (because I really do like to respond to them all!) and I have to say that I have heard about mixing cottage cheese and peaches but have never tried it. And I do like both! And cinnamon! I have found, though, as I grow older, that I have a hard time with the salty taste of cottage cheese. They probably don’t make a low sodium version, though, right? I am going to buy some this week and try your idea! Thanks for sharing!
